Quick Links:

Jeff Maggert / Jesper Parnevik, 30-33 – 63 (-8)

  • Teammates for the first time at the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf, Maggert and Parnevik carded six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 eighth for an 8-under 63.
  • The team birdied three of the four par 3s (Nos. 4, 7 and 17). The next three rounds will be played on par-3 courses, as Maggert/Parnevik will play 18 holes at Top of the Rock on Friday and Sunday, and the 13-hole Mountain Top on Saturday.
  • In two previous appearances at this tournament, Maggert finished T22 with Andy North last year and T26 with Sandy Lyle in 2016. For Parnevik, he has three previous starts: T16 with Steve Lowery in 2017, T15 in Tommy Armour III in 2016, and T10 with Armour in 2015.
  • Maggert’s best finish in six starts this season was a T9 at the Cologuard Classic, and he is currently No. 40 in the Charles Schwab Cup.
  • Parnevik has two top-10s in seven starts this season, with his best being a tie for third at the Rapiscan Systems Classic. He is currently No. 17 in the Charles Schwab Cup.

Woody Austin / Mark Calcavecchia, 31-33 – 64 (-7)

  • Austin/Calcavecchia made five birdies and an eagle on No. 8 en route to a 7-under 64. The team played the par 5s in 4-under and they parred all four par 3s.
  • Austin won the 2016 Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf with teammate Michael Allen. Last year, Austin and Calcavecchia teamed up for the first time and finished T20.
  • Austin and Calcavecchia teamed up to win the QBE Shootout in 2007.
  • Austin’s best finish in seven starts this season was T9 at the Cologuard Classic, and he is currently No. 33 in the Charles Schwab Cup.
  • Calcavecchia’s 2018 season includes a win at the Boca Raton Championship, his first since 2015, and he is currently 10th in the Charles Schwab Cup.

Other Notes:

  • The team of Tom Lehman (2) and Bernhard Langer (4) has a combined six Charles Schwab Cups. They carded a 6-under 65 and are T3. This is Langer’s first appearance at this event since 2016, when he and Lehman were T8.
  • Davis Love III is making his first start on PGA TOUR Champions since he finished T10 in the 2017 PURE Insurance Championship. This is the second year he and Scott Verplank have teamed up, as they finished T8 at the 2017 Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf.
  • Billy Andrade and Joe Durant, winners of the 2015 Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf, are T3 after an opening-round 65. This is the fourth straight year Andrade and Durant have competed together at this event.
  • Paul Broadhurst and Kirk Triplett are partnering for the first time, and they are part of the five-way tie for third at 6-under. Broadhurst is making his tournament debut, while Triplett is making his fifth start, with his best previous finish being third with Craig Stadler.
  • Steve Flesch and David Toms round out the fivesome at 6-under. Flesch and Toms are one of two teams of top-10 players (the other is Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly, who are T22 at 3-under). Quick Links:

Michael Allen / John Daly (-13)

  • Playing Top of the Rock on Friday, Allen and Daly carded three front-nine birdies in the alternate shot format, and they followed with five back-nine birdies in the best ball format. Their 8-under 46 was the day’s best score.
  • Last year, Allen and Daly finished T13 in their debut as a team at this tournament.
  • Allen is one of seven players to win this event with two different partners, winning with David Frost in 2012 and with Woody Austin in 2016. Should he and Daly go on to win this year, Allen would be the first player to win with three different partners.
  • Allen has played all eight tournaments so far this season, and his best finish was T17 at the Rapiscan Systems Classic. He is currently 45th in the Charles Schwab Cup.
  • On the season, Daly’s best finish was an eighth-place showing at the Chubb Classic, and he is currently No. 58 in the Charles Schwab Cup. His next scheduled start is at the Insperity Invitational, where he broke through with his first PGA TOUR Champions win last year.

Carlos Franco / Vijay Singh (-12)

  • Playing 13 holes of best ball at Mountain Top, defending champions Carlos Franco and Vijay Singh carded a 7-under 32 and are part of the three-way tie for second at 12-under.
  • Should Franco and Singh win again, they would be the first team to successfully defend their title since Jim Colbert and Andy North won in 2000 and 2001.
  • Franco has played in all eight tournaments so far this season, and his best finish was a T10 at the Toshiba Classic. He is currently 44th in the Charles Schwab Cup.
  • Singh’s 2018 season includes a win at the Toshiba Classic, his second career victory and first individual win on PGA TOUR Champions. He has three top-10s in five starts and is No. 4 in the Charles Schwab Cup. He has also played six events on the PGA TOUR, and his best finish was 49th at the Masters.

Other Notes:

  • Tom Lehman and Bernhard Langer birdied four of their first five holes at Top of the Rock in the alternate shot format. They added two more birdies en route to a 6-under 48, and they are T2 at 12-under. The team has a combined six Charles Schwab Cups, and this is Langer’s first appearance at this event since 2016, when he and Lehman were T8.
  • First-time partners Paul Broadhurst and Kirk Triplett made three birdies in each format at Top of the Rock, resulting in a second-round score of 6-under 48, and a 12-under total. Broadhurst is making his tournament debut, while Triplett is making his fifth start, with his best previous finish being third with Craig Stadler.
  • Brandt Jobe and Scott McCarron, teammates when they played college golf at UCLA, were 3-under in alternate shot (4 birdies, 1 bogey) and 4-under in best ball (4 birdies) at Top of the Rock. They are one of three teams tied for fifth at 11-under. Jobe is making his tournament debut, while McCarron has twice partnered with Brad Faxon, finishing T22 in 2016 and T30 in 2017.
  • After opening with a 5-under 66, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Jose Maria Olazabal shot 6-under 48 after carding three birdies in each format at Top of the Rock. The Spaniards finished T8 in their debut as a team last year.
  • Steve Flesch and David Toms round out the trio at 11-under. Flesch and Toms are one of two teams of top-10 players (the other is Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly, who are T8 at 10-under). Flesch is coming off a win at last week’s Mitsubishi Electric Classic, his first win on PGA TOUR Champions, while Toms has four top-five finishes this season.
  • Jay Haas aced the 131-yard seventh hole at Mountain Top with a gap wedge. It was the eighth hole-in-one since the tournament moved to Big Cedar Lodge in 2014, and the first to take place on a course other than Top of the Rock. For Haas, it was his second hole-in-one on PGA TOUR Champions, with the other taking place at the 3M Championship in 2011.
